GOD ON OUR SIDE
Oh - this world has its beauty, but I’m only a guest And I have no receipt for the price of success. Life can be an oyster, with a pearl his inside Or a rough empty shell without God on our side.
The world comes to greet you, or tear you apart Temptations that meet you can set fire to your heart And burn it to ashes, where no warmth can reside And existence means nothing without God on our side.
For winter’s the season for the lost and the lone And the cold edge of reason can cut to the bone It’s buying an image or a mask that will hide All the hunger and yearning for God on our side.
Sucked into a whirlpool; a spiral of greed, The more we possess then the more we will need. Then it’s power to the rich and the poor cast aside, And it’s just exploitation- without God on our side.
And the notes keep on changing, so they can’t learn the song, And the laws re-arranging, so the right becomes wrong And we’d best take a millstone, to weigh in the tide, Than to turn away coldly, without God on our side.
For the stones they are silent, while the sticks drum their call, That summon the young to the place of the fall, But stones that are living will stand and abide, When evil floods in, we’ll have God on our side.
