One Little Candle
This story is about a little candle that lived in a shop full of lighting fixtures. The owner lived in an apartment at the rear of the shop.
Owner was a very jolly man who loved meeting new people. He lived alone in the apartment as his loving wife had died several years before. He loved making lighting fixtures of all kinds. Candle stayed on a shelf behind the desk where Owner had the cash register and kept the shops books.
There were lighting fixtures of all kinds there. There were wall lamps, desk lamps, table lamps, and in the very center of the shop was Chandelier.
Chandelier was magnificent to look at a really could light up the entire shop all by himself. He was also very arrogant. He was always boasting about how magnificent he was and how stupid and puny Candle looked. Often he would say, “Why does Owner keep that thing here?” “He can’t give off enough light to do anything with.”
That would get the other fixtures talking then also. Desk Lamp could not understand why anyone would want something like that when they could have something as practical as she was. Table Lamp wondered why Owner would keep something like that when he has something as beautiful as she was.
Candle spent all of his time alone and wondered himself why he was there. He believed what the others said about him and wanted to run away and hide. Day after day he would sit on the shelf and feel sorry for himself.
One night there came a very fierce storm. Owner went to the desk and brought out the books. “Well, there will be no sleeping for me for a while.” “The storm is just too fierce.” He said to out loud to himself. As he got his pencils and paperwork together, he also got Candle from off of the shelf. He looked at Candle and smiled. “I just may need you tonight my friend,” He said to Candle. Candle wondered why Owner could need him.
Owner sat him where he could reach him easily and laid some matches close by. Then, Owner went about doing the ledger for the shop. All of a sudden there was a flash of light that was brighter than anything any of the fixtures had ever seen. Lightening bolt made his presence known in a very powerful way. Just as quickly as the flash came everything in the shop went dark. Candle had never seen this kind of darkness before. It really made him uneasy.
Just then Owner picked up the matches and lit the little candle. “I had a feeling that I just might need you tonight.” He said softly to Candle. All of a sudden Candle felt warmth that he had never felt before. He looked around and saw the glow that he gave off. He smiled and for the very first time he felt important and knew that he had a job to do.
All of the power was out in the town. The storm subsided a bit and Owner decided that it was now time to try and get some sleep. He picked up Candle and took him as he walked to the apartment. Candle gave enough light that Owner could easily see where he was going and not trip over anything.
Owner got ready for bed by Candles light. He sat him down on the night stand and crawled into bed. “I am glad that I had you here Candle” said Owner. Candle felt, for the first time in his life, happy. For the first time he realized that he was important and did have a necessary job to do.
