August 24, 2006 “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63b). There is an old saying, one we have all heard many times and may even have repeated ourselves, especially when we were children and wanted to convince someone that we were tougher than we really were: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Now that we are grown and have experienced what life in a sin-stained world can do, we know how untrue that old saying is. Words can hurt us—and they do. They can, in fact, scar us for our entire sojourn on earth. “You’re ugly.” “You’re worthless.” “You’re stupid.” “You’ll never amount to anything.” “I wish you’d never been born.” “I don’t love you anymore. I’m leaving.” But words can also heal. “Come unto Me…I will give you rest.” “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” “I will never leave you or forsake you.” “I will not forget you…. I have carved you on the palm of My hand.” “I will come again…to take you to Myself, that where I am, you may be also.” “You are accepted in the beloved.” “And lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age….” What an awesome responsibility we writers have been given—to speak life and not death, healing and not hurt, love and not hate. May we remember and honor that responsibility each time we put pen to paper—or fingers to keyboard—and speak the words of Jesus, words of spirit and of life. (C) KATHI MACIAS www.kathimacias.com
