[Jesus]…said to them, “My mother and my brothers [and sisters]
are these who hear the word of God and do it” (Luke 8:21).
This has been quite a family week, hasn’t it? As I’ve read the daily posts and prayed over the requests that came in, I realized how many of us were caught up in the events of our parents and spouses and siblings and children—which, of course, is absolutely normal. But I also realized how much we who share one another’s prayer requests and praise reports have truly become family.
I was so touched as I read the many prayer requests that came in this week for my son’s wedding (which, by the way, was absolutely lovely!), as well as continued inquiries about my grandson Mikey and how he is doing (much better). Every now and then one of you will write and ask about my youngest son, Chris, for whom I requested prayer nearly a year ago, and that truly blesses me to think that you are still thinking of and praying for him. What a great family you all are!
But I suppose I was most touched and reminded of our oneness in Jesus when I read of the passing of Gail’s daughter, Brenda, after a long and valiant fight against ovarian cancer. How we grieve together in Gail and Bob’s loss, and yet how we rejoice to know that dear Brenda is at last free of pain and is dancing with joy in the presence of her beloved Savior!
For that’s what families do, isn’t it? They weep together, they rejoice together, they pray together. And one day, like Brenda, we will all dance together in the presence of our Savior, for our family is not temporal—it is eternal. We are joined together in an everlasting bond of love with the One who died to make that bond possible. We, the brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ Himself, have heard the Word, and by His grace and mercy, we do it. May we all continue to walk in that great bond of eternal love as we “write the vision…and make it plain” so that others may hear of the great love and mercy of God and join our family circle.
