Stepping Into Stillness By Jeff Ferris And, behold, the Lord past by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake: but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. (1 Kings 19:11&12 KJV) The clock reads 2:48 AM. Having awakened and feeling well-rested, I gently slip out of bed, being careful not to disturb my sleeping wife. I make my way to the living room, for an appointment of sorts; a one-on-one meeting, a conference with God. I am met with a stillness that moves upon my soul, a quietness that speaks to my inner most being. The only audible sound is the ticking of the clock on the mantel; a sound that is not heard during my waking hours. It feels as if the whole world is asleep. It is in these moments God seems closest. I sense He has been near, watching over our rest, waiting for us to rise to spend time in His presence. He is pleased to see me. He is quick to meet me. His voice rides upon a wind without sound, His mercy rushes in motionlessly. I am a child sitting upon my Father’s knee. It is there that I am refreshed. It is there that I am reminded of His great compassion. And it is there that my soul is positioned to receive His silent affection.
